The start: 0 to 100 km/h

Off the line, the 550e xDrive hits 100 km/h in 4.24 s versus 5.77 s for the 530d. The instant torque of 700 Nm from the electric motor makes the difference. At this point, the 550e xDrive leads by 1.53 s and sits roughly 9 m ahead.

From 100 km/h to 400 metres

At 200 metres, the 550e xDrive is doing 153 km/h against 130 km/h for the 530d. The gap is 1.04 s. The challenger starts to claw back ground.

At 400 metres standing start, the 550e xDrive crosses the line in 12.27 s versus 14.07 s. The 1.80 s gap represents roughly 78 m of track - a gap visible to the naked eye.

Beyond 400 metres: top speed comes into play

Past 400 metres, the 550e xDrive continues to build its lead. At 600 metres, it runs at 216 km/h versus 180 km/h. At 1,000 metres, the 550e xDrive finishes in 21.96 s versus 25.72 s, with a 3.76 s lead. Both vehicles have similar top speeds (250 (i.e. 155 mph - industry threshold) vs 250 (i.e. 155 mph - industry threshold) km/h), preventing any comeback.

What the numbers don’t tell you

The 550e xDrive features all-wheel drive (AWD) against the 530d’s RWD. At low speeds (0-30, 0-50, 0-80 km/h), AWD doubles the driven contact area: all four wheels transmit torque to the road, virtually eliminating wheelspin at launch. This traction advantage is decisive in the range where the motor delivers peak torque, before power and aerodynamics take over.

Both rivals share the same electronic speed cap: the 550e xDrive and the 530d are governed to 250 (i.e. 155 mph - industry threshold) km/h. At that speed, standard-fit tyres approach their safety threshold - an industrial ceiling common to most electric vehicles in this segment. Neither car shows its true aerodynamic potential in this duel.

Instant electric torque gives an advantage off the line. The higher top speed of the combustion engine gives an advantage over longer distances. The distance at which one catches the other depends on the top speed differential.

In European road use (130 km/h max), both vehicles reach the legal speed limit in under 9.17 seconds. The 1.53 s difference in 0 to 100 km/h is mostly felt in motorway merging and overtaking.
