The start: 0 to 100 km/h

Off the line, the 530e xDrive Touring hits 100 km/h in 6.19 s versus 6.74 s for the 525d. The instant torque of 420 Nm from the electric motor makes the difference. At this point, the 530e xDrive Touring leads by 0.55 s and sits roughly 3 m ahead.

From 100 km/h to 400 metres

At 200 metres, the 530e xDrive Touring is doing 129 km/h against 123 km/h for the 525d. The gap is 0.25 s. The challenger starts to claw back ground.

At 400 metres standing start, the 530e xDrive Touring crosses the line in 14.41 s versus 14.92 s. The 0.51 s gap represents roughly 21 m of track - two to three car lengths.

Beyond 400 metres: top speed comes into play

Past 400 metres, the 530e xDrive Touring continues to build its lead. At 600 metres, it runs at 181 km/h versus 171 km/h. At 1,000 metres, the 530e xDrive Touring finishes in 26.01 s versus 27.19 s, with a 1.18 s lead. Despite a higher top speed (243 km/h), the 525d never recovers its launch deficit.

What the numbers don’t tell you

The 530e xDrive Touring features all-wheel drive (AWD) against the 525d’s RWD. At low speeds (0-30, 0-50, 0-80 km/h), AWD doubles the driven contact area: all four wheels transmit torque to the road, virtually eliminating wheelspin at launch. This traction advantage is decisive in the range where the motor delivers peak torque, before power and aerodynamics take over.

Both rivals are electronically governed, but not at the same level: the 530e xDrive Touring is capped at 225 km/h, the 525d at 245 km/h. This isn’t a physical engine limit - it’s a manufacturer choice, usually for tyre safety or homologation reasons. Neither car reaches its true aerodynamic top speed.

Instant electric torque gives an advantage off the line. The higher top speed of the combustion engine gives an advantage over longer distances. The distance at which one catches the other depends on the top speed differential.

In European road use (130 km/h max), both vehicles reach the legal speed limit in under 10.75 seconds. The 0.55 s difference in 0 to 100 km/h is mostly felt in motorway merging and overtaking.
