Off the line, the X3 xDrive30d hits 100 km/h in 5.62 s versus 6.05 s for the X5 xDrive30d. The 0.43 s gap is negligible: both vehicles are neck and neck.
At 200 metres, the X3 xDrive30d is doing 130 km/h against 125 km/h for the X5 xDrive30d. The gap is 0.15 s. The challenger starts to claw back ground.
At 400 metres standing start, the X3 xDrive30d crosses the line in 13.96 s versus 14.33 s. The 0.37 s gap represents roughly 16 m of track - two to three car lengths.
Past 400 metres, the X3 xDrive30d continues to build its lead. At 600 metres, it runs at 180 km/h versus 172 km/h. At 1,000 metres, the X3 xDrive30d finishes in 25.66 s versus 26.57 s, with a 0.91 s lead. Both vehicles have similar top speeds (245 vs 235 km/h), preventing any comeback.
Both rivals are electronically governed, but not at the same level: the X3 xDrive30d is capped at 245 km/h, the X5 xDrive30d at 235 km/h. This isn’t a physical engine limit - it’s a manufacturer choice, usually for tyre safety or homologation reasons. Neither car reaches its true aerodynamic top speed.
With two combustion powertrains, the difference comes down to power-to-weight ratio (6.75 kg/hp vs 7.66 kg/hp) and transmission (Automatic vs Automatic).
In European road use (130 km/h max), both vehicles reach the legal speed limit in under 10.01 seconds. The 0.43 s difference in 0 to 100 km/h is mostly felt in motorway merging and overtaking.
Over 0–100 km/h, X3 xDrive30d G01 wins (5,62 s vs 6,05 s).
X3 xDrive30d G01 goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,62 seconds (calibrated simulation).
