The start: 0 to 100 km/h

Off the line, the P7 hits 100 km/h in 4.22 s versus 6.56 s for the Cooper S FWD. The instant torque of 655 Nm from the electric motor makes the difference. At this point, the P7 leads by 2.34 s and sits roughly 25 m ahead.

From 100 km/h to 400 metres

At 200 metres, the P7 is doing 147 km/h against 132 km/h for the Cooper S FWD. The gap is 1.67 s. The challenger starts to claw back ground.

At 400 metres standing start, the P7 crosses the line in 12.54 s versus 14.62 s. The 2.08 s gap represents roughly 91 m of track - a gap visible to the naked eye.

Beyond 400 metres: top speed comes into play

Past 400 metres, the gap narrows. The P7 maxes out at 170 km/h while the Cooper S FWD keeps accelerating towards 250 (i.e. 155 mph - industry threshold) km/h. At 600 metres, the gap is down to 1.96 s from 2.08 s at 400 metres.

At 1,000 metres, the P7 finishes in 25.24 s versus 26.02 s, with just 0.78 s to spare. The Cooper S FWD fails to fully close the launch gap.

What the numbers don’t tell you

The P7 features all-wheel drive (AWD) against the Cooper S FWD’s FWD. At low speeds (0-30, 0-50, 0-80 km/h), AWD doubles the driven contact area: all four wheels transmit torque to the road, virtually eliminating wheelspin at launch. This traction advantage is decisive in the range where the motor delivers peak torque, before power and aerodynamics take over.

Electronically capped at 170 km/h, the P7 never reaches its natural aerodynamic ceiling in this duel. That’s not a physical limit of the motor - it’s a deliberate manufacturer decision, typically tied to standard-fit tyre ratings or model-range positioning.

Instant electric torque gives an advantage off the line. The higher top speed of the combustion engine gives an advantage over longer distances. The distance at which one catches the other depends on the top speed differential.

In European road use (130 km/h max), both vehicles reach the legal speed limit in under 9.51 seconds. The 2.34 s difference in 0 to 100 km/h is mostly felt in motorway merging and overtaking.
