The start: 0 to 100 km/h

Off the line, the 420i hits 100 km/h in 7.44 s versus 7.48 s for the 220i. The 0.04 s gap is negligible: both vehicles are neck and neck.

From 100 km/h to 400 metres

At 200 metres, the 420i is doing 117 km/h against 124 km/h for the 220i. The gap is 0.45 s. The gap widens compared to the 0-100.

At 400 metres standing start, the 420i crosses the line in 15.38 s versus 15.53 s. The 0.15 s gap represents roughly 6 m of track - barely a car length.

Beyond 400 metres: top speed comes into play

Past 400 metres, the situation changes. The 220i maxes out at 229 km/h while the 420i keeps accelerating towards 238 km/h. At 600 metres, the gap has dropped to 0.10 s.

Around 515 metres, both vehicles are level. This is the inversion point: the 220i overcomes its launch deficit thanks to a 9 km/h higher top speed.

At 1,000 metres, the 220i finishes in 27.73 s versus 28.23 s. The 0.49 s delta shows an extremely tight race.

What the numbers don’t tell you

Both rivals are electronically governed, but not at the same level: the 220i is capped at 229 km/h, the 420i at 240 km/h. This isn’t a physical engine limit - it’s a manufacturer choice, usually for tyre safety or homologation reasons. Neither car reaches its true aerodynamic top speed.

With two combustion powertrains, the difference comes down to power-to-weight ratio (7.32 kg/hp vs 8.29 kg/hp) and transmission (Automatic vs Automatic).

In European road use (130 km/h max), both vehicles reach the legal speed limit in under 12.15 seconds. The 0.04 s difference in 0 to 100 km/h is mostly felt in motorway merging and overtaking.
